Going Non-Profit

Another well known regional paper, the Spokane(Washington) Spokesman-Review is going non-profit. The new ownership model will include a partnership with Gonzaga University and other educational institutions.

Before someone else buys the Hartford Courant – the nation’s “oldest continuously published” newspaper – and completes its full destruction as an institution, it would be great if it could be salvaged by taking it non-profit. The owner of the Spokesman-Review does not see a future for news delivered in print, but that does mean legacy papers can’t survive as institutions serving the community by covering and delivering news in new ways.

The institution of the Courant is worth saving and there are a number of ways and means to do it and a number of non-profits and colleges in Connecticut with the incentive to partner to make it happen – before it is swallowed up by a a new owner interested only in bleeding it dry.
