Bill Moyers, one of the first former White House aides to transition from politics to a successful career in journalism, died Thursday at the age of 91 following a long illness.

Moyers served as press secretary to President Lyndon Johnson and went on to an illustrious career as an editor and reporter. According to one former colleague, he was working on PBS documentaries as recently as two years ago.

Before a long run at PBS, Moyers was publisher of Newsday and worked at CBS News as a reporter and NBC News as an analyst. His approach to journalism was clearly dedicated to leveling the playing field of life in favor of the have-nots over the haves.
