The abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s mother has horrified the nation. Some 55+ Laurel readers may recall the shocking kidnappings of John Paul Getty III (1973) and Patty Hearst (1974), and history has never forgotten the abduction and murder of the Lindbergh baby (1932).
In recent years, the TV morning programs, in the effort to promote on-air personalities, have increasingly highlighted the families of anchors and weathercasters: Mother’s and Father’s Day profiles, favorite family recipes, etc. It’s hokey, sure, but if it’s about a broadcaster you like, it’s fun to watch (“Al Roker’s dad was a New York City bus driver”).
Given Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, which may or may not be related to Savannah Guthrie’s fame, one wonders if there will be a reluctance to expose the family members of celebrities to the public in the future.
