How old is too old to continue serving? Is it time for generational change? Two questions that have been lingering over politics in the United States since President Joe Biden decided to run for re-election in 2024 only to pull out after an age related debate debacle.
Last week’s primary defeat of 78 year old Congressman John Larson by 47 year old Luke Bronin is serving as the hook for stories about whether it’s time for older members of congress to step aside.
The CTMirror followed up its Larson coverage with a story questioning the future of 80 year old SenatorĀ Richard Blumenthal.
A few days later, The New York Times raised the same questions about 80 year old Ed Markey of Massachusetts.
Adding to the questions about how old is too old are the cases of former California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who died in office, the recent health crisis facing Senator Mitch McConnell, the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, and President Trump’s erratic behavior that some associate with his age(80).
