Gavin Keefe, a thirty-six year veteran of The Day of New London, is retiring today(Friday)as a sports writer for the paper. Keefe is best known for his coverage of University of Connecticut basketball, but has covered everything on the sports beat during his time at the paper.
Despite changes in the industry in recent decades, the corps of local Connecticut sports reporters has remained consistent over a long period of time. With Keefe’s departure, The Day is bringing back Ned Griffin who has been described as a “walking encyclopedia” of high school sports and has worked for The Day in the past.
Assignment Changes:
Alison Cross, who has been covering Plainfield, Killingly and Putnam, as part of The Day’s efforts to expand its coverage area, has been assigned to cover Electric Boat, the Navy, healthcare and the casinos. She’s taking over the work done by Brian Hallenbeck, who retired earlier this year.
Sarah Bedigian, who was graduated this year from the University of Connecticut, has been hired to cover Plainfield, Killingly and Putnam. At UConn, Bedigian was the editor in chief of The Daily Campus. She also interned at the CTMirror.
Kim Drelich, who as many of you know covers Groton, is adding coverage of Stonington and the tourism industry to her portfolio. Tourism is the second leading economic sector in southeastern Connecticut.
