After a two-month hiatus, residents of Newtown will once again have newsprint on their hands. The Newtown Bee announced last week that it is resuming the printing of its weekly newspaper. In early April, R. Scudder Smith, the Newtown Bee’s publisher, made the difficult decision to suspend printing the 143-year-old paper due to the threat of Covid-19 to the paper’s small staff. Since then, the paper has continued to publish stories on its website.
Here is a portion of Smith’s announcement:
No one in the years of our existence could ever have believed that a virus would take down our country in such a manner and cause untold deaths and business shutdowns of a magnitude never experienced before. But, with perseverance, the country is starting to recover and we, too, have come back to continue once again publishing our newspaper.
