From P.R. Week:

A US appeals court struck down a long-time ban on political advertising on public TV and radio stations on Thursday. The Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco contended that the ban violated the First Amendment’s free speech clause. The decision comes as both major parties are preparing for a presidential campaign that will likely set political ad-spending records. The campaigns of both President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney are working to raise hundreds of millions of dollars, much of which will be spent on campaign ads, by this fall. Although the decision could help many cash-strapped public stations improve their revenue numbers, some media advocacy groups rallied against it, saying it would turn them into another political battleground.
