Insiders at Fox 61 have noticed a decline in political reporting at the station that began before the departure of political reporter Emma Wulfhorst last month. Sources say producers at the station were told to stop referring to Wulfhorst as “Fox 61 Political Reporter” several months ago and the change coincided with a decrease in attention to events at the Capitol and other political stories from around the state.
In the late 1980s several Connecticut television stations openly decided politics made for bad television leading to a decline in coverage until the year-long battle over the imposition of the state income tax in 1991. That story led to nightly coverage and the naming of designated “political reporters” at each station to explain what was happening.
Even during the period of time when political coverage was on the outs, each station used imagery of the state Capitol at the top of their newscasts and in news promos.
