You may have noticed that since the conclusion of the GOP presidential debate on CNN Wednesday night the phrase “mic drop moment” is sweeping the Internet and has been adopted as part of the vernacular of the main stream news media(by main stream we mean pre-Internet based news delivery systems).

Carly Fiorina, it is said, had several mic drop moments. This means she deftly hammered home a point so effectively that she didn’t have to do or say anything else, while at the same time she put all others in their place.

Just look at the audience, drop the mic, and walk off stage. Boom! Bam!! And so on and so forth, baby.

In stand-up comedy and hip-hop, the mic drop has been around for about three decades. Perhaps one of the earliest mic drops on film comes in Eddie Murphy’s 1983 stand-up special Delirious.
