As speculation intensifies over whether Senator Richard Blumenthal will run for re-election in two years, Art House, who served as chief of staff to former U.S. Senator Abe Ribicoff, published an essay in The Hartford Courant explaining how Ribicoff made the decision to walk away from another campaign in 1980 at age 69.
It’s a good insider account that may be helpful to those covering Blumenthal today.
It’s notable that Ribicoff made two calls once it was time to make his decision public. The first was to his then Senate colleague Lowell Weicker and the second was to the Courant’s political columnist.
