A combination opinion/photo essay by columnist Maureen Dowd and photo editor Kathy Ryan shows the pandemic emptied New York Times newsroom in black and white.

The atmosphere of a working newsroom offers vitality and inspiration to any team of journalists, but the pandemic has shown, beyond doubt, that with modern technology a newsroom is something most news organizations can do without.

In Connecticut, several newsrooms have turned virtual, for all practical purposes, over the last eighteen months. We wonder if the change will be permanent.

Editor’s Note: Have you noticed that the phrase “the last eighteen months” has been used to describe the length of the pandemic for about the last three months? How can that be true?
