Starting today the Manchester Journal Inquirer will start charging non-subscribers to read most of the online content. According to Publisher Elizabeth S. Ellis, advertising on the internet site is not covering the expense of covering the news: “Some newspapers in Connecticut have drastically reduced their local and state news reporting,” says Ellis. “The JI will not do this. Newspapers are crucial to community. Without newspaper reporting, impartial and comprehensive, communities disintegrate. But news gathering costs money, and those costs have to be recovered.”
