Things got a little hot in the Connecticut sports X-sphere on Monday. New London Day columnist Mike DiMauro wrote a column referencing UConn football coach Jim Mora’s bombshell announcement that he’s leaving for Colorado State. DiMauro recalled the outrage from UConn fans when former coach Randy Edsall made a similar surprise exit in 2010, and pointed out the contrasting reactions:
Straight up: Jim Mora abandoned the UConn football program. Period. Like the Colts did to Baltimore. Left without saying goodbye. Left before the UConn bowl game. And the best the fandom could muster, including our fanboy governor, was thanking him on social media for all he’d done.
Enter sports reporter Dave Borges from Hearst Connecticut. Here’s their back-and-forth on X:

Know what annoys the (bleep) out of me? These “columnists” who lob hand grenades from 30 miles away but never show their face on campus or confront the people they criticize.

I did it for 25 years, Dave. Went round and round with Jim and Geno every day.
Loved it. Never managed to turn into a fanboy like you, though.

Cool, Red Smith. Glad you’re not a fanboy. Go BC! Go Yankees!

I know. Imagine rooting for your Alma mater. Crazy. Meanwhile, continue to allow
your boy to approach Joe D – 56 straight pressers dropping the F bomb – without
comment.

Not going “round and round” on this all day as you so bravely did with Jim and Geno. Flight to Kansas to catch. But if you don’t think I’ve criticized and pissed off Hurley for his sideline
behavior, etc…. Ask him. Oh wait, that would require meeting him face to face.

This is gloriously entertaining. Most fiction is.
See you in the locker room, fellas!
