Gianola – KOIN
From New Haven to Portland, Oregon an entire generation of news reporters and anchors with up to forty years in the business is retiring. Jeff Gianola of KOIN in Portland is the latest.
Gianola has no specific connection to Connecticut, but we point out his departure as part of a trend that has touched Connecticut.
Retirements are always a part of any industry, but this class of retirees has an important connection to the history of television news. They were raised as the medium was at the height of its power and influence. They were more likely to look to figures like Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and Barbara Walters as the people they wanted to be when they grew up.
As a result, television newsrooms across the country are losing an important piece of institutional memory and understanding of the original intent of television news – and that was; to deliver the news.
