Collins’ Exit

Dave Collins, longtime columnist for The Day of New London, has been shown the door. Here’s his email to his colleagues:

I just wanted to let you know I’ve been fired as The Day’s freelance columnist. It happened kind of suddenly, by email.
I won’t get into the nitty gritty, but it was a dispute over editing a column about Rep. Greg Howard of Stonington and his defense of the masked, warrantless ICE raids in Connecticut.  I was told additional comments by Howard were added to the column, to make it more balanced, but I couldn’t find a copy of the changes in the system and no one has shared them. I asked that it therefore not run. I was giving comment on his public comments, what seemed like pretty straightforward newspaper opinionating.
It saddens me to leave a place I’ve called my professional home for more than 45 years, an institution I still love. I marvel at the remarkable work that’s been done there so long by so many fine journalists. The Day has always punched way beyond its weight. I marvel at a culture that through the years has created so many fine reporters who have gone on to make significant marks in the larger world of journalism.
It’s heartbreaking that The Day has to struggle against these formidable headwinds that are changing the industry.  I wish everyone the very best in those challenges. I have the greatest respect for what you all do.
