The Ruiz Situation

We’ve been watching with interest the story of Vanessa Ruiz, the Arizona news anchor who is being criticized by some for how she pronounces Spanish words on air.

Apparently some viewers think the bilingual reporter should stick with one language and one pronunciation guide when delivering the news.

This week she took time during one of her broadcasts to defend herself and argue she is pronouncing Spanish words the way they were meant to be pronounced and has no plans to change her approach.

The late Peter Jennings was often criticized for the same approach. Some viewers would complain about his Canadian accent (and now here’s Sam Dun-ald-sen at the White Hoose) thinking he was attempting to fake a British accent.
