The New York Times' Examination of Its Own Reporting

More than a few times this past week we heard regular readers of the New York Times say that given the controversy surrounding the Blumenthal/Vietnam story, the paper’s “Public Editor” should weigh in. That would be Clark Hoyt (above) whose job it is to examine the Times’ journalistic practices. Hoyt does weigh in this Sunday and, for the most part, defends the newspaper’s reporting of the story.

On the facing page of the Times’ “Week in Review” section, Op-ed Columnist Maureen Dowd writes a psychoanalytical piece about Blumenthal that also highlights embellishments by Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden:

…like other politicians, Blumenthal added a filigree here and there, not because he needed them to win, but perhaps because those more heroic actions fed his innermost desires.
