Quinnipiac University journalism professors Karin and Bill Schwanbeck will screen their new documentary, “Running on Empty: The Brain Drain in Local TV News,”  on Wednesday, September 28, at 7 p.m. at the University’s campus in Hamden.

“We were prompted to do this documentary when we realized crime and grime stories were standard on local TV newscasts and we saw very little in-depth or investigative journalism,” Karin Schwanbeck said. “Now we know one of the reasons why there is so much shallow reporting — the older reporters have been fired to save money or are leaving the business because they are frustrated.”

  1. The emphasis on childproof, safe, “family friendly” emphasizes “fresh faces”…more often than not with little between those pretty ears. Its shocking how trivial most of the TV news has become..not only in Hartford, but in much larger markets. Most people don’t care, because most people don’t want challenges to their peers (or their own brain)…safe is the modern emphasis.
