Writing for Politico, media columnist Jack Shafer suggests cable news is simply not as relevant as many think it is – and we should all consider turning it off.

His argument revolves mainly around the size and demographics of the audience (much smaller than most realize) and the undue attention talking heads get from every day journalists who think they need to watch cable news to avoid missing anything.

It is a good to keep things in perspective, but like the niche audience Politico caters to, wrapped inside the cable news audience of older Americans spread across the country, is an even smaller subset of viewers, who also read Politico, who use cable news like a utility to drive the conversation about events of the day and public policy. Domestically and internationally.
