Speaking of public radio…

Facing a $30 million budget gap NPR is laying off ten percent of its workforce and canceling several podcasts to focus on avoiding further financial decline and to deliver on its core mission of providing programming to its member radio stations across the country.

NPR’s chief executive John Lansing said, “”We literally are fighting to secure the future of NPR at this very moment by restructuring our cost structure. It’s that important. It’s existential.”

An article posted on NPR’s website said the announced retirement of forty-one year veteran foreign correspondentĀ Sylvia Poggioli, made earlier this week, was hastened by the looming layoffs. Other well known names may be forced to depart as part of this round of cost cutting. NPR said it would not report more details until all effected employees are notified later today(Friday).
