As expected, Nexstar – owner of WTNH and other properties in Connecticut, has agreed to acquire Tegna –  owner of WTIC-TV and other properties in Connecticut, for $6.2 billion. The deal includes hundreds of stations across the country, but the Fox 61 and News 8 angle makes the merger important for Connecticut.

Nexstar is already one of the largest local television ownership chains in the country. This transaction would make it even bigger. The entire deal appears to hinge on the belief that the current Federal Communications Commission will easily approve the deal despite opposition from some consumer groups who argue that the merger will stifle competition.
