According to a new survey from Pew, American news consumers understand the importance of journalism in today’s society, but they have different views of what a journalist is. They want “honesty, intelligence, and authenticity” from their news providers.

On the authenticity question, respondents were not in agreement about what it means to be authentic, but recognized it as an important trait. The survey found that news consumers don’t think you need a journalism degree, or need to be affiliated with a traditional news organization to be considered a journalist.
