Headline Draws Some Criticism

As stories broke yesterday about three Connecticut families filing a federal lawsuit to stop transgender athletes from competing in girls sports, one headline from WFSB caught some attention on Twitter.

The original WFSB headline read, “3 CT high school girls track athletes file suit after males win their events.”

The story continued to refer to the transgender athletes as “males” and “boys,” rather than how the athletes identify.

WFSB later updated the story, fixing the errors.

Former Hearst CT VP of News and Digital Matt DeRienzo tweeted yesterday afternoon:

While news media make mistakes every so often, it is important to note that GLAAD has published a detailed Media Reference Guide for reporting on LGBTQ+ people and issues to ensure accuracy and fairness.
