Desert or Dessert?

An article this week features the effort by Winsted resident and consumer activist Ralph Nader to launch a monthly newspaper in his hometown as part of campaign to end news deserts.

The first edition of the Winsted Citizen is expected this month. The plan is to publish monthly through the end of the year with the hope there is enough support to move to weekly publication next year.

An article by the Medill Local News Initiative quibbles with the idea that Winsted is a news desert, because residents there have access to the Waterbury Republican, Torrington Citizen, Hartford Courant and the state’s four television stations. On the other hand, none of those outlets focus even secondarily on Winsted and its surrounding towns.

Sometimes journalism critics can’t take “yes” for an answer. At The Laurel, we favor more not less journalism.
