Sam Zell, the real estate investor who bought Tribune Publishing, including the Hartford Courant in 2007, is dead at age 81.
Zell was a brash businessperson who did not hesitate to share his strong opinions – opinions that did not sit well with many journalists who saw his raw profit motive approach to newspaper ownership as being at odds with the public purpose of the industry.
