For the past several years, news start-ups have considered phones first when it comes to designing the look of new platforms.

In the last week, CNN has made some obvious changes to its phone app to make the presentation of its coverage phone-friendly. Hero images dominate the top of your screen as you open up, headlines are bold and concise, and several stories can follow the lead before you are offered new photos or video.

The changes also come as CNN has begun requiring subscriptions for access to most stories. It might be a case of the network making sure its customers feel they are getting something special for their money after decades of getting CNN content for free.
