Pelley Says So Long

Scott Pelley’s sign-off as anchor of the CBS Evening News on Friday night says a lot about the relevance of network news anchors in the internet age.

Hardly anyone noticed. And while CBS will spend the summer trying to find the right replacement capable of injecting new excitement into the evening broadcast, such a pick is a long shot.

Editor’s note: When Walter Cronkite stepped down from the CBS Evening News, ABC and NBC both carried his sign-off live. It is unfair to make a direct comparison between Cronkite and Pelley, but the difference does reflect the fact that the “big three networks” have lost their news dominance.
