Morgan McGinley, known for his cheerful smile, curious nature, soft wit, sharp mind, and precise pen, is dead at the age of 84.

For forty-two years he was one of the most indispensable reporters and editorial writers on the staff of The Day newspaper of New London. McGinley joined The Day’s editorial page in 1981 and was considered a key to the paper’s “institutional voice,” whose editorials and opinion columns influenced public policy and at times vexed the state’s top political figures.

He retired from The Day in 2007 and was inducted into the New England Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2024. After graduating from Colby College he worked at The Providence Journal before joining The Day in 1965 where he remained for the rest of his career.

According to The Day, McGinley had Parkinson’s disease and died after a “short bout with pneumonia.” The paper’s coverage of McGinley’s death is filled with fond memories from people he covered and worked alongside in the newsroom.
