J.I. Suing Courant

It’s official… the Journal Inquirer is suing the Hartford Courant for plagiarism.

The J.I. is seeking financial damages for news stories that the Courant plagiarized over the summer.

The story is Page One in this afternoon’s J.I. It will be interesting to see what kind of placement, if any, the story has in tomorrow’s Courant.

  1. I posted this to the Courant Alumni site. I think it belongs here as well.

In its haste to malign The Courant, the JI has libeled the incredibly capable, professional, hard-working and highly ethical Larry Smith. “Management” at the JI cited a story Larry wrote as being “plagiarized.” It was not. Larry attended the same meeting the JI reporter did, but did not write live from the event.

Chris Powell really ought to be ashamed of himself. At the very least, Powell and the JI owe Larry an apology as they’ve caused to be published a lie about Larry that could affect his ability to find full-time employment as a journalist.

I wonder if the lie contained in the JI’s lawsuit is actionable. I’d love to see Larry go after Powell the JI.
