The Hit Heard ‘Round the Industry

By now you’ve seen the clip; a reporter at a West Virginia TV station hit by a car while doing an early morning live shot. Fortunately she wasn’t hurt. But the incident drew heated reaction focused on the safety of reporters in the field. Here’s a sample:

Don’t celebrate or normalize this. Everyone at the station failed her, starting with the decision to have her alone for live shots.

This infuriates me. No reporter should be asked to run their own live shots. And they should’ve cut away immediately instead of making her talk through the shock. This isn’t a wacky TV moment — she’s lucky to be alive.

A final note: the viral clip was filmed in Yorgey’s last week on the job at WSAZ, as she’s set to start as a reporter for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.
