Amanpour Scarfless

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour was left sitting by herself on a make-shift TV set in New York City Thursday when the Iranian president refused to sit for an interview unless she wore a headscarf.

The University of Rhode Island graduate pointed out that no previous Iranian leader had ever insisted on a headscarf when an interview was taking place outside Iran. Amanpour was told by an aide that the demand was being made because of the “situation in Iran.”

“The situation” was an apparent reference to the death of a 22 year old woman who died last week while in the custody of the “morality police.” She had been detained for failing to properly wear her head covering. The death has sparked protests across Iran.
