The opinion page of The New York Times is not the place to visit this Wednesday morning if you are looking for a cheery outlook on current affairs.
Publisher A.G Sulzberger published the text of a speech he gave about what he sees as a well orchestrated attack on the free press in this country and around the world. He notes that given the financial challenges many news organizations are working under, the free press as we know it, is at considerable risk.
Three Yale University professors, meanwhile, published a video opinion essay explaining why they are leaving the country. All three are experts on authoritarianism and at least two of the three see the United States moving in a direction they do not want to be part of. The third, Timothy Snyder, a well known presence on cable news, explained his more complicated reasoning in the Yale Daily News last week.
