Layoffs have hit WTNH/WCTX.
This week, Nexstar laid off prominent anchors and reporters at WPIX (New York), WGN (Chicago), and KTLA (L.A.). We hoped that didn’t foreshadow bad news at 8 Elm Street, but it has. Some significant layoffs took place this week; we’re told it’s behind-the-scenes employees and that the promotions department was hit particularly hard.
The Laurel has reported on Newstar’s likely merger with Tegna (FOX61), and presumably this cost-cutting precedes that.
Meanwhile, published reports indicate Nexstar Media Group has spent $3.2 million on lobbying the federal government in 2025 seeking approval of the merger. This is roughly 10 times more than what it spent every year from 2018 to 2023 per OpenSecrets.
