…in the not too distant past…toward the end of the last century…when nearly every AM radio station in the state of Connecticut – and some of the FMs – had small news departments that did their best to compete with local television news and local newspapers. Often, the radio news departments would be first with breaking news because they did not have to wait until 6 o’clock to go on the air or the next morning to publish.
That was then and this is now…
WILI in Willimantic has laid off its last newscaster.
John Tuite, according to the station’s website, had been with the station for “over twenty years.” His primary job was the news, but he also filled in – in nearly every on-air role at the station during his time there. In addition to working at WILI, Tuite is the well known public address announcer for UConn basketball and football.
