Pending further developments, this is the last day the Waterbury Republican-American will publish under the ownership of the Pape family.

Once considered a rival to the once all powerful Hartford Courant, the Republican-American has been a dominant media force on the western side of the state since the mid-1800s. The Pape’s have been involved in the paper’s ownership since 1901.

Today(Wednesday) Hearst Connecticut Media is scheduled to close on a deal to purchase the Waterbury paper. The acquisition was announced in December of last year. In the last two years Hearst has successfully acquired two other family owned papers: The Meriden Record Journal and the Journal Inquirer of Manchester. Long time subscribers have given the new owners mixed reviews.
