In an effort to undo months of turmoil and prepare for a new season, CBS News is announcing the addition of several new correspondents and contributors to its flagship program 60 Minutes.
Among the new hires is conservative New York Times opinion columnist Ross Douthat of New Haven. Douthat was raised in New Haven and attended Hamden Hall where he was graduated in 1998 along with classmate Michael Barbaro, who hosts the Times podcast, The Daily. Douthat is leaving the Times to join CBS. During his time at the paper he was often spotted working from a coffee shop in New Haven.
Sebastian Junger, a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, is joining 60 Minutes as a contributor. Junger is best known as the author of the 1997 book The Perfect Storm which meticulously chronicled the sinking of the Andrea Gail, a Gloucester fishing boat, off the New England coast in 1991. The book was made into a movie starring George Clooney.
In addition to Douthat and Junger, CBS announced that Gianna Toboni, formerly of Vice News and CNN and Trevor Phillips, formerly of Sky News and recently of CBS, will join 60. Norah O’Donnell, will increase her contributions to the broadcast.
