From the assignment desk:

You’re not a Connecticut reporter if you haven’t covered the annual Boom Box parade in Windham while pulling a shift on the Fourth of July. This year’s event, sponsored by WILI, is the 40th anniversary edition.

Quinnipiac University graduate Rebecca Turco, now a reporter with WJLA in Washington, D.C. picked up her first Emmy Award last week. She was part of a team covering a bribery case involving a member of the D.C. city council.

Another penalty in connection with the now long running Freedom of Information battle between the town of Old Lyme and the CTExaminer. The first selectwoman of the town was fined $250 by the state’s FOI Commission last week after the town failed to promptly respond to Examiner FOI requests dating back to March of 2024.

Listeners to NRP’s Weekend Edition on Sunday morning heard a report from Nirvani Williams, a Report for America funded reporter, working with New England Public Media and based in Springfield, Massachusetts. She covers socio-economic disparities. The story for NPR told the story of an Afghan refugee attempting to reunite with children he had to leave behind when he left his country.

A regular Laurel reader and sometimes tipster spotted a Connecticut connection in the New York Times crossword puzzle last week. See “twelve down:”
