CCSU students win Crystal Pillar.
A group of Central Connecticut State University students collected a Crystal Pillar Award at this weekend’s regional Emmy awards in Boston.
The group won in the news magazine category for a half hour documentary they produced on climate change which involved a study abroad semester in Brazil. Former NBC Connecticut meteorologist Darren Sweeney was the group’s faculty advisor. The Crystal Pillar is known as the “student Emmy.”
The CCSU students on the project include:
Savanna Yelling, Ryan Hayes, Eary Banushi, Aniya Pouncey, Maria Sola, Jayden Klaus, Madison Musco and Daschall Hayes.
Sweeney also won a separate Emmy as part of a team from NBC Connecticut for their work on the station’s Kid’s Connection(Goes to Space) project.
Here is a final list of all the New England Emmy recipients including several from Connecticut and several Boston names who began their careers in Connecticut.
WTIC-AM has parted ways with midday host Tom Shattuck. He had been with the station since 2021. He told listeners on his podcast that the station told him it would not be renewing his contract. No word on who or what will fill the midday slot.
As MSNBC spins off from NBC Universal it appears most of the familiar names – including Stamford native Jen Psaki – will be staying with the cable network. José Diaz-Balart and Steve Kornacki are staying with NBC.
