In a national story worth noting, Washington Post columnist and associate editor Ruth Marcus has quit the paper after forty years.

Marcus left her job Monday after publisher Will Lewis refused to print a column she had written that was critical of Post owner Jeff Bezos and his plans for the paper.

From her publicly available resignation letter:

“Jeff’s announcement that the opinion section will henceforth not publish views that deviate from the pillars of individual liberties and free markets threatens to break the trust of readers that columnists are writing what they believe, not what the owner has deemed acceptable.”

Marcus was more than a columnist for the Post. Her appearances on national television over the decades has made her one of the public faces of the Post and a representative of its brand standards. Her resignation says those standards have been broken.
