Judicial Opinion

Judges, once they become judges, usually go out of their way to withhold their opinions on anything outside the boundaries of the courtroom.

So it’s unusual and that Connecticut Superior Court Judge Gary White decided to write an op-ed piece in which he accused U.S. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles of “quitting on herself, her teammates and her country.”

He laced his criticism with praise for Biles to soften the blow, but given the more enlightened understanding we all should have by now about mental health, his conclusions seem tone deaf and not very judicious.

Given broad public support for Biles this may be one case in which Judge White should have followed precedent and deferred his opinion without prejudice.
