John Long, a veteran photojournalist with The Hartford Courant has died at the age of 81.

Long was with the Courant for thirty-five years and though he served as a photo editor for a short period – he decided he would rather be out shooting and returned to the field. During his time at the Courant he was named Connecticut Photographer of the Year twice.

He self-published two books; one on dance photography and another on hot dogs – his favorite food. Long was a fixture at news events throughout Connecticut; always quiet, observant, smiling, and wearing his glasses strung around his neck. For many years he taught journalism at Manchester Community College and he taught ethics at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

He lived in Manchester most of his life and was inducted into the Manchester Sports Hall of Fame.
