Alden Goes Multi-Platform With Lobbying Effort

Alden Global Capital flexed what remains of its diminished public affairs muscle over the weekend by running the same editorial in most of the newspapers it owns arguing against a threat by Google to end the practice of offering links to news sites.

In Connecticut, the editorial was labeled as a “staff report” in the Hartford Courant.

The issue stems from efforts in California to force search engines and social media companies to pay for the news they offer as links. The idea is seen as a way to boost revenue to the struggling news industry.

Some commentators in the journalism world are concerned about Alden’s power to influence local editorial decisions.
